The ABC News/Washington Post poll, fielded by Langer Research Associates, remains one of the most cited national surveys in election years. In 2026, their generic congressional ballot and presidential approval questions anchor a lot of cable coverage.
What the generic ballot means
Asking voters which party they prefer for Congress is a rough national indicator, not a district-by-district map. A five-point Democratic lead on the generic ballot does not mean Democrats gain five points in every House seat. Redistricting, incumbency, and candidate fundraising still dominate local outcomes.
Battleground extensions
ABC/Post occasionally oversamples competitive states. When they publish Senate subsamples, check the sample size, subsamples often have margins of error of six points or more.
Balanced reading
Pair ABC/Post national numbers with state polls from the same week. If national mood improves for Republicans but Michigan Senate polling still shows a tight El-Sayed–Rogers race, the national story may not match every battleground.
