What’s at stake in 2026?

U.S. midterm elections are held in even-numbered years between presidential elections. In 2026, voters will choose members of Congress, governors in dozens of states, and thousands of state and local offices.

All 435 voting seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are on the ballot every two years. One-third of the Senate (Class II seats plus special elections) is also up, along with 39 gubernatorial races.

Midterms historically serve as a referendum on the sitting president's party. Since World War II, the president's party has lost House seats in all but two midterm cycles.

Majority math: Democrats need a net gain of 3 seats for a majority (218+). Democrats need a net gain of 4 seats for control (51+).

How the midterms work

  • Midterm election A general election held near the midpoint of a president's four-year term, typically featuring congressional races and many state offices.
  • House of Representatives The lower chamber of Congress with 435 voting members serving two-year terms. Every seat is elected in 2026.
  • U.S. Senate The upper chamber with 100 senators serving six-year terms. About one-third of seats are on the ballot each cycle; 35 seats are contested in 2026.
